SPANISH WOMEN ARE THE ONES RETARDING MATERNITY THE MOST AMONG THE EUROPEANS AND THEY CHOOSE THE EGG FREEZING

According to CREA’s figures, in just one year the number of women who freeze their eggs has doubled, being their working career one of the main reasons.

• On the occasion of International Women’s Day, CREA advises not to postpone pregnancy or egg freezing after the age of 35

• More than 85% of the women who freeze their eggs, are going to use them years later to become mothers

Valencia. 07.03.16. Spain is one of the European Countries where maternity is delayed the most. Among the main reasons leading to posticipate pregnancy there are working reasons. This is pointed out by CREA (Assisted Reproduction Medical Centre in Valencia) on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Current average age at which spanish woman have her first pregnancy exceedes the age of 30 being one of the highest age of the world  and at the same time “when fertility starts to decline”, Dr. Carmen Calatayud Crea’s co-director points out. Therefore eggs freezing has become the most effective and recurrent technique for those women who wish to delay pregnancy for working reasons. One figure that, according to CREA’s data, has doubled itself in the past year and whose more common profile is that of a women who, around the age of 34, is still in fertile age but, at the same time, has higher needs in her working life.

In fact, Spain is one of the European Countries that, due to its advanced legislation and the high qualification of assisted reproduction techniques, is at the top with regards to eggs freezing  from women who wish to delay pregnancy in favour of their working life.

Dr. Calatayud recommends that egg freezing is performed before the age of 35  although “it’s not something strictly rigorous, as it depends on the ovarian reserve of each case, but it’s very important to bear in mind that female fertility is decreasing year by year, her eggs are getting older and there are more difficulties not only to obtain pregnancy but also to have a healthy baby, as the age alters the egg’s maturation process and reproductive failures might take place”.

In this sense, and according to what was published by the scientific journal  \\\'Perspectivas Demográficas\\\', one out of four women born in the mid 70s won’t have children,  determining this generation as one of the most infertile of all the generations born in Spain in the last 130 years. The two main causes are due, according to the article’s authors, professors and researchers of the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Albert Esteve, Daniel Devolder y Andreu Domingo, to the fact that women consider that they are too young and they do not contemplate it, and to those who do not fullfil the family and/or professional conditions optimal for which they postpone pregnancy, which inevitably leads to reduced fertility or infertility due to age

Lastly, it’s should be pointed out that more than the 85% of the women who have frozen their eggs recurr, years later, to them to obtain pregnancy.  Spanish legislation does not set limits with regards to the age at which the woman can recurr to her eggs to get pregnant.
